5 Steps to a Calmer Holiday

The holiday season can bring fun memories and exciting gifts, but it can also bring panic, stress, and anxiety. If you relate to the last few items, you’re not alone. The holidays are stressful and full of high expectations, which can be hard to manage. Below are a few tips to help you through a fun, but challenging time of year.

  1. Take a walk. Even if it’s just around the block. Allow your mind to wander while you stroll and bring yourself back to a positive place. Sometimes all you need is a short break and a change of scenery to refocus.
  2. Set aside time to unplug. Turn the TV off, put your phone in a different room, and just BE. This will give you a moment to really appreciate everything around you and connect with your friends and family without distractions. Aim to unplug for at least an hour each day.
  3. Use essential oils. Rub a drop of lemon or peppermint essential oil on your wrist. Store some in your bag so you can use it when you’re starting to feeling anxious at a holiday party. Both lemon and peppermint have the power to calm nerves.
  4. Take a deep breathe. You’ve heard it a million times but it really does work and you can do it anytime, anywhere. Simple but effective! Give it a try with this simple breathing exercise.
  5. Manage your expectations. Not everything is going to be flawless, and that’s okay! Expecting our kids to behave perfectly or creating a magazine-worthy meal can create so much stress that we lose sight of the positives. Keep your mind focused on the true meaning of the task at hand. Planning a family meal means you have family in your home and food on your table. Now that’s perfect.
